Green IT

With globalization, revolutionary innovations occur in many fields including the technology sector to ease the daily lives of the people. This rapid development process increases the hardware needs in IT Centers. Depending on these hardware needs, discourses related to energy consumption, quantity of the heat released to the environment and paper consumption depending on the technology usage increase. Hence, concepts like pollution, carbon dioxide production, and global warming have become popular in recent years. In this process, as “Green IT”, we voluntarily make attempts to decrease energy consumption, carbon dioxide emission, paper consumption and to reduce the costs and we work hard to reach our quality targets as IT Directorate.

In this century, the paper consumption of the countries is compared with their level of development and it is accepted as an indicator for their level of development. In Turkey, paper consumption per a person in an office is 0,7 kg/day, that is approximately 140 pages. We can save thousands of trees by decreasing our paper consumption just for 1%.

We have implemented 'One laptop, one sapling' project

Since 2001, we are the university that delivers the most laptop computer in Turkey. As IT Directorate, we are working for increasing the green fields and growing the new ones instead of the ones that are destroyed. In 2008, we initiated a project that sets forth with the slogan ‘One laptop, one sapling’ and we are investing in future with more than 4000 saplings and enlarging Izmir University of Economics forest.

We have implemented “Sapling planting in exchange for blank cartridges” project.

Blank cartridges are recycled and in exchange for these cartridges, saplings are planted in the name of the University.

We have started to work for Paperless University system.

In Turkey, paper consumption per a person in an office is 0,7 kg/day, that is approximately 140 pages. We can save thousands of trees by decreasing our paper consumption just for 1%. With Document, Workflow, and Form Process System Project, it is aimed to provide more documents to reach more people with fewer work forces in electronic environment. By lowering the usage of paper, we are continuing to do our best for a green future.

  We are using virtualization technology.

Since 2004, with virtualization at the University, the tasks undertaken by more than one physical server have been classified and they are carried out by less physical servers. Thus, energy consumption and the released heat decrease. Therefore, the need for cooling system used to lower the ambient temperature will decrease. Virtualization also contributes to lowering the energy usage and solid waste production.

We are replacing Desktop Computers with Laptop Computers.

As of this year, instead of Desktop computers, all the academicians are being delivered laptop computers that radiate release less heath and consume less energy. We are investing in the future in the scope of our Green IT policy.

  We are renewing our servers.

With the rapidly growing technology, servers that consume less energy, occupy less space, and need less cooling are produced. As IT Directorate, we follow technology closely and choose servers in accordance with our Green IT policy.

We replaced CRT monitors with LCD monitors.

By taking the health of the personnel into consideration, who are spending most of their time in front of a computer, we are replacing CRT monitors with LCD monitors and the heath released and the energy consumed are decreased.

We have implemented online survey system.

Instead of giving a copy of the server for each attendee, with the help of the online survey system implemented by the IT Directorate, surveys are conducted without using papers. Thus, we prevent paper consumption and investing in the future.

We have implemented EkoPrint printing project.

With Ekoprint system, since 2009, the users are able to take printouts from the computers at the campus by using their user names and passwords or by using their EkoCards. With the help of Ekoprint system, the printouts are kept under control and paper consumption is decreased.

We have implemented EmaX announcement system.

With EmaX announcement system developed and applied by IT Directorate in 2008, the announcements are sent online to the students, academic and administrative personnel and thus, paper consumption is prevented since it is not needed to take printouts. On the other hand, each announcement and many attachments related to these announcements are kept as one copy in the server. We are investing in future with the system that uses very less system sources.

We are offering a personal web and disk area.

With the free personal web and disk area that we provide for all our students, academic and administrative personnel, the files are shared online and waste of paper is prevented since it is not need to take printouts.

  We arranged unnecessary computer usage.

As a result of the arrangements we make, the computers in common areas that are not being used for a certain period of time are closed automatically. Thus, the energy consumption is lowered.

We provided the infrastructure of E-Learning system.

Education methods become different with the development in technology. We will save on electric, heath and costs with web-based e-learning system that is presented online as of this year at the University.

What can you do for a green future
  • - You can shut down your computer while leaving your office,
  • - You can avoid taking printouts when unnecessary,
  • - You can arrange your settings in a way that will automatically shut down your monitor when not used for a while,
  • - You can unplug the battery charger of your laptops when you do not use,
  • - You can take out double-sided prints from compatible printers,
  • - You can collect your electronic wastes in a separate place to send to recycling facilities,
  • - You can throw the wastepaper to recycling bins instead of garbage,
  • - You can use the back side of the wastepaper (if not confidential) to take printouts,
  • - You can use battery recycling bins,
  • - You can share the documents digitally at the University if possible.
Let’s protect the forests and reduce paper consumption. Let’s leave a beautiful world to the future generations. Each paper we save will protect thousands of trees.
Please take a step to protect our natural resources.
